Question 1

What are the dimensions and specifications of this furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This Elvstrom Sails furling mainsail has a sail area of 30 square meters. Its luff measures 12.9 meters, the foot is 4.54 meters, and the leech is 13.5 meters.

Question 2

What is the condition of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This furling mainsail is in “As New” condition. Resail is dedicated to giving proven sails a second life, ensuring high quality and performance for cruisers and club racers.

Question 3

Which boat types is this furling mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This furling mainsail was originally made for a Bavaria 40. However, its dimensions (Luff: 12.9m, Foot: 4.54m, Sail Area: 30m²) are smaller than typical standard mainsails for a Bavaria 40, which often have a sail area around 45.33 m². To ensure proper fit, it is crucial to compare these measurements against your boat’s specific mast and boom dimensions (P and E measurements) and furling system requirements. It may be suitable for other vessels requiring a mainsail with similar dimensions.

Question 4

What are the key benefits of a furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Furling mainsails offer significant advantages, particularly for short-handed or solo sailing. They allow for easy and quick reefing and stowing directly from the cockpit, enhancing safety and convenience, especially in variable wind conditions. This eliminates the need to flake and cover the mainsail manually after each use.

Question 5

How should I care for and maintain a furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Proper care for a furling mainsail includes ensuring correct halyard tension, regularly cleaning and lubricating the furling drum, boom track, and running rigging. Always furl and unfurl the sail when the boat is headed directly into the wind, with the mainsheet and boom vang loosened, to prevent jamming and unnecessary wear. Avoid using electric winches for furling to prevent overtightening, which can damage the system or the sail.

Question 6

Are there any specific considerations for this mainsail since it has no battens?

Accepted Answer

This furling mainsail is designed without battens. While battened furling mainsails often offer better sail shape control and smoother furling, a non-battened sail is generally simpler in construction. Without battens, maintaining optimal sail shape, especially when reefed, might require more attention to trim. Ensure the luff tension is appropriate for smooth furling and unfurling.
