Accepted Answer

This is a new furling mainsail, designed for convenience and performance. It features 3 grey furling patches, 2 grey trim stripes, an Oceanis Logo, a 6mm luff tape, and Natural 5020 on the clew. Furling mainsails are designed to be easily rolled into the mast or boom, simplifying sail handling and reefing from the cockpit.

Question 2

What material is this mainsail made from?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail is crafted from DCX Medium White (380gr) laminate sailcloth, produced by Dimension-Polyant. DCX cruising laminates are engineered for high durability, low stretch, and ease of handling, particularly for furling systems. The material incorporates a mesh embedded in two films with special taffeta on both sides, featuring a 9° X-Ply for enhanced diagonal support. It also includes a UVM® Finish, providing robust protection against UV radiation and reducing mildew growth.

Question 3

What are the dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

The dimensions of this mainsail are:

Sail Area: 32.3 m²
Luff: 13.9 m
Foot: 4.8 m
Leech: 14.45 m

Question 4

Which boat is this mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was originally designed for an Oceanis 430 short rig. The dimensions (Luff 13.9m, Foot 4.8m) are consistent with typical mainsail specifications for this model. We recommend verifying these dimensions against your specific boat’s rig measurements to ensure a proper fit.

Question 5

What are the advantages of using a furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Furling mainsails offer several significant advantages for cruisers and club racers:

Ease of Handling: They allow for quick and straightforward deployment, reefing, and stowing directly from the cockpit, reducing the need for crew to go on deck.
Reefing Capability: You can easily adjust the sail area by partially furling the sail to adapt to varying wind conditions, enhancing safety and control.
Sail Protection: When furled, the sail is largely protected from UV exposure, salt, and other environmental factors, contributing to its longevity.
Convenience: There’s no need for flaking, folding, or covering the mainsail after sailing; simply roll it up.

Question 6

How should I care for and maintain this furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Proper care extends the life and performance of your furling mainsail:

Regular Rinsing: Rinse your sail with fresh water and dry it thoroughly before long-term storage to prevent mildew.
UV Protection: While DCX includes UV protection, always furl the sail completely when not in use to minimize prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Prevent Flogging: Avoid prolonged flogging of the sail, as this can degrade its performance. Trim promptly to keep the sail filled.
Lubricate Track: Regularly clean and lubricate the luff track with a dry lubricant to ensure smooth furling and unfurling.
Inspect for Damage: Periodically check for any minor tears or signs of wear and address them promptly to prevent them from worsening.
