Question 1

What is a Fathead Mainsail?

Accepted Answer

A Fathead Mainsail, also known as a square-top mainsail, features an extended, wider head compared to traditional mainsails. This design increases sail area, particularly higher up where the wind is often stronger and cleaner. It is aerodynamically efficient, enhancing power in lighter winds and allowing the sail to twist and flatten for easier tuning in stronger conditions. Fathead mainsails typically use full battens for stability and require boats without a backstay or with a double backstay system.

Question 2

What material is this mainsail made from?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail is constructed from Radial Laminate. Laminate sails are engineered by bonding multiple layers of materials, including reinforcing fibers, between layers of film. This radial (or trioptimal) construction aligns the sail panels to optimally distribute forces and maintain the sail’s intended shape. This results in enhanced shape retention, reduced stretch, and improved durability compared to woven sailcloth.

Question 3

What are the dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

The dimensions of this 34m² Fathead Mainsail are:

Sail Area: 34 m²
Luff: 12.34 meters
Foot: 4.08 meters
Leech: 12.89 meters

Question 4

Which boat is this mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was originally designed for a Sun Odyssey 349. While specifically made for this model, it may be compatible with other vessels of similar size and rig type. We recommend comparing the detailed dimensions (Luff, Foot, Leech, and Sail Area) with your boat’s specifications to ensure proper fit and performance, especially considering the requirements for a fathead mainsail regarding backstay clearance. The Sun Odyssey 349 is a fractional sloop, and some variants are designed to accommodate such a sail.

Question 5

What is the condition of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This 34m² Fathead Mainsail is new.

Question 6

Who manufactured this sail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was manufactured by Elvstrom Sails. Elvstrøm Sails is an established international sailmaker known for designing and producing sails for both racing and cruising, including various laminate technologies.

Question 7

What are the performance advantages of a Fathead Mainsail with Radial Laminate construction?

Accepted Answer

A Fathead Mainsail combined with Radial Laminate construction offers several performance benefits:

Increased Power: The wider head maximizes sail area aloft where wind is stronger, providing more power, particularly in light air.
Improved Shape Holding: Radial Laminate construction minimizes stretch and maintains the sail’s designed shape under load, translating to more efficient energy transfer from the wind.
Enhanced Control: The design allows the sail’s top to twist and depower automatically in gusts, reducing helm load and making trimming easier across a range of conditions.
Reduced Drag: The square-top profile can reduce tip vortices, leading to less drag and improved lift.
