Question 1

What is a furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

A furling mainsail is designed to roll up and stow inside the mast (in-mast furling) or boom (in-boom furling). This system simplifies sail handling, reefing, and stowing, making sailing more convenient and safer, especially for short-handed crews.

Question 2

What does "EMS" signify for this Elvstrom furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

EMS stands for Elvstrom Mainsail System. It denotes an in-mast furling mainsail equipped with full continuous vertical battens. These battens provide crucial support for the leech and also function as reefing points, helping to maintain optimal sail shape and efficiency whether the sail is fully deployed or reefed.

Question 3

What are the benefits of vertical battens in this furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Vertical battens offer several advantages for a furling mainsail:

They allow for a positive roach, which increases the sail area and provides a more efficient aerodynamic profile, enhancing performance.
They provide consistent support for the leech, preventing flogging and helping the sail maintain a better shape.
They act as effective reefing points, stretching the luff to create a flatter, more efficient sail when reefed.
They ensure smooth furling by helping to stretch the sail and prevent folds as it rolls into the mast.

Question 4

What are the exact dimensions of this 55m2 Furling Main?

Accepted Answer

This Elvstrom 55m2 Furling Main has the following key dimensions:

Sail Area: 55 square meters
Luff: 17.15 meters
Foot: 5.9 meters
Leech: 17.75 meters

Question 5

What does "As New / lightly used" condition mean for this sail?

Accepted Answer

This description indicates that the sail is in excellent, near-new condition, having experienced very minimal use. At Resail, we are dedicated to providing high-quality used sails that extend the lifecycle of proven equipment without compromising on performance or trust. An “As New” sail is expected to retain nearly all its original performance characteristics, reflecting our commitment to sustainable sailing.

Question 6

How can I determine if this furling mainsail will fit my yacht?

Accepted Answer

To ensure this furling mainsail fits your yacht, you should accurately measure your boat’s rig dimensions. Key measurements include the maximum luff length (P) and foot length (E) that your mast and boom can accommodate. For furling mainsails, it’s particularly important to measure the maximum luff length that your specific furling system (including the drum and swivel) can handle. It is generally recommended to measure the actual rig directly rather than relying solely on old sails, as they may have stretched over time.
