Question 1

What is an In-Boom Furling Mainsail?

Accepted Answer

An in-boom furling mainsail is designed to roll horizontally into a rigid mandrel located inside the boom for storage and reefing. This system allows for controlled sail handling, reefing, and stowing directly from the cockpit. It also accommodates full-length battens and a full roach, which contributes to a more efficient sail shape and improved performance compared to in-mast furling systems.

Question 2

What are the dimensions and specifications of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail has a sail area of 67.3 square meters (m²). The luff, which is the leading edge of the sail, measures 20 meters. The foot, the bottom edge of the sail, measures 5.7 meters. It is produced by Elvstrom Sails.

Question 3

What is Elvstrom EPEX sail technology?

Accepted Answer

EPEX is a patented membrane technology from Elvstrom Sails. It features a custom design where individual fibers are precisely placed according to the sail’s load paths. This process, which includes intense vacuum lamination, creates sails with exceptional shape stability, durability, and reduced weight. EPEX sails can incorporate various high-performance fibers like Technora, Vectran, and carbon, making them suitable for both performance cruising and racing applications.

Question 4

What is the condition of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail is described as “As new,” indicating it is in excellent, near-unused condition.

Question 5

How does an in-boom furling mainsail enhance sailing performance and safety?

Accepted Answer

In-boom furling systems enhance performance by allowing the use of full-length battens and a full roach, resulting in a more efficient sail shape and better control, particularly in light winds and upwind conditions. For safety, sail handling, reefing, and stowing can often be managed entirely from the cockpit, reducing the need for crew to be on deck. Additionally, the sail is protected from UV exposure and weather when stowed, which can extend its lifespan.

Question 6

What type of boat is this mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

In-boom furling mainsails are well-suited for performance cruisers, high-end cruising yachts, and certain multihulls where both ease of handling and sailing performance are important. They are particularly beneficial for larger yachts, generally 50 feet and above, where the advantages in handling and reefing efficiency justify the system’s setup.

Question 7

How should I maintain an Elvstrom EPEX furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

To maintain an EPEX furling mainsail, ensure it is clean and dry before storage, especially for winter. Regularly inspect all stitches, batten pockets, luff tape, and the leech for any damage or abrasion. Use patches to protect areas where the sail might rub against boat parts. Always use a sail cover when mooring to protect against UV exposure. For winter storage, it is recommended to roll EPEX sails from top to foot to prevent permanent creases. Avoid using chemical solvents or harsh detergents for cleaning; instead, use warm water or a mild detergent with a soft brush for spot cleaning.
