Question 1

What type of sail is this and what material is it made from?

Accepted Answer

This is a furling jib, designed for convenient handling by rolling the sail around the forestay. It is constructed from Dacron, a durable woven polyester fabric known for its strength, resistance to UV degradation, and reliability, making it a popular choice for cruising and club racing sails.

Question 2

What are the specific dimensions of this jib?

Accepted Answer

This jib has a sail area of 7.2 square meters. Its luff measures 6.1 meters, the foot is 2.5 meters, and the leech is 5.8 meters.

Question 3

What does "natural UV" protection mean for this sail?

Accepted Answer

“Natural UV” refers to the inherent UV resistance of the Dacron material itself, which is designed to withstand prolonged sun exposure. Additionally, furling sails often feature a dedicated sacrificial UV strip to absorb harmful ultraviolet radiation, protecting the main sailcloth from weakening and deterioration over time.

Question 4

What kind of boat is this jib suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This furling jib was originally intended for a 19-footer. Dacron sails are generally well-suited for recreational cruising and club racing on various boat sizes due to their durability and ease of handling.

Question 5

What is a 5mm luff tape and how does it function?

Accepted Answer

A 5mm luff tape is a robust rope sewn into the leading edge (luff) of the jib. It is designed to slide into the groove of a roller furling system, allowing the sail to be easily rolled up or unfurled. 5mm is a common size for furling systems, ensuring compatibility with many standard headstay extrusions.

Question 6

What is the condition of this sail and who is the producer?

Accepted Answer

This sail is new. It was produced by North Sails, a recognized sailmaker known for their commitment to sail design and construction quality.
