Question 1

What type of sail is the 88m2 Code Permanent Hoist?

Accepted Answer

This is an 88m2 Code Permanent Hoist sail from Elvstrom Sails, which is a specialized type of Code 0 sail. It is a hybrid designed to bridge the performance gap between a genoa and an asymmetric spinnaker, particularly effective for reaching in light to moderate wind conditions. Elvstrom’s Code Permanent Hoist is specifically designed for cruising sailors, allowing the sail to remain hoisted for extended periods due to its UV protection and compact furling characteristics.

Question 2

What are the key dimensions of this Elvstrom Code Permanent Hoist?

Accepted Answer

Sail Area: 88m2
Luff: 19.57m
Foot: 10.06m

Accepted Answer

This Elvstrom Code Permanent Hoist sail is listed in “As new” condition, indicating it has seen minimal previous use and is well-preserved.

Question 4

Which boat types is this 88m2 Code Permanent Hoist suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This sail was originally designed for a Catana Ocean Class catamaran, a vessel typically around 15.75 meters (51.7 feet) in length. Its dimensions suggest it is suitable for similar large cruising catamarans or monohulls that require a sail of these specific measurements for enhanced reaching performance.

Question 5

Who manufactured this Code Permanent Hoist sail?

Accepted Answer

This sail was produced by Elvstrom Sails, an international sailmaker founded by four-time Olympic gold medalist Paul Elvstrom in 1954. Elvstrom is known for designing and producing sails for both racing and cruising purposes.

Question 6

What are the performance benefits of a Code Permanent Hoist sail?

Accepted Answer

The Elvstrom Code Permanent Hoist is designed for optimal performance in light to moderate winds, particularly on reaching courses (approximately 55-120° True Wind Angle and 5-13 knots true wind speed). It provides significant power and speed where a genoa might be inefficient and an asymmetric spinnaker cannot yet fill properly. Its design allows for easy furling and deployment, making it a practical choice for cruising sailors looking to reduce engine hours.
