Question 1

What is a staysail and how is it typically used?

Accepted Answer

A staysail is a fore-and-aft rigged sail whose luff (leading edge) is attached to a stay running forward from a mast. Most staysails are triangular in shape.
Staysails are primarily used to augment a boat’s sail power and help balance the helm, especially in heavier winds or when reaching. They can be set in combination with a partially furled genoa or a reefed mainsail to provide power and balance across various wind conditions. Optimal conditions for a cruising staysail are often around 10-12 knots on a beam reach, and they are generally effective in apparent wind angles between approximately 50-130 degrees.

Question 2

What do the specifications "30 mq" and "CUT BACK: 0" mean for this staysail?

Accepted Answer

The “30 mq” indicates the sail’s area is 30 square meters. Sail area is a key specification for determining a sail’s power and suitability for a vessel.
“CUT BACK: 0” refers to the foot (bottom edge) of the sail. A sail with a “cut back” foot has a reduced or trimmed lower area. “CUT BACK: 0” signifies that this staysail has no reduction in its foot area, meaning it extends fully to its intended attachment point on the deck or stay without a high cut. This design can contribute to aerodynamic efficiency by sealing the gap between the sail and the deck.

Question 3

What are "WICHARD ON TACK CORNER" and "PISTONS HANK for cable ⌀ 14"?

Accepted Answer

WICHARD ON TACK CORNER: Wichard is a manufacturer of high-quality, forged stainless steel marine hardware, known for its strength, corrosion resistance, and reliability in demanding marine conditions. The tack corner is the lower forward corner of the sail. A Wichard fitting at this point indicates a robust and dependable attachment for securing the sail to your boat’s forestay or deck.
PISTONS HANK for cable ⌀ 14: Piston hanks are fittings used to attach the luff of a sail, such as a staysail or jib, to a forestay or cable. They feature a spring-loaded piston mechanism that securely fastens the sail to the wire. The “⌀ 14” specifies that these hanks are designed to fit a cable with a diameter of 14mm. These hanks are typically made from durable materials like impact-resistant, UV-stabilized nylon with a brass piston.

Question 4

What is the condition of this UK Sailmaker staysail?

Accepted Answer

This is a used staysail from UK Sailmaker. Resail specializes in offering high-quality used sails that are physically inspected by experienced sailmakers to ensure their performance, safety, and durability. Quality used sails retain strong sailcloth, a usable shape, and reliable stitching, providing a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to new sails.

Question 5

How can I determine if this staysail is suitable for my boat?

Accepted Answer

To determine suitability, you need to compare the sail’s dimensions with your boat’s rig measurements. For a staysail, key measurements include the height of your inner foretriangle (often referred to as ‘Is’) and the base of your inner foretriangle (‘Js’), measured from the inner forestay to the deck. These measurements define the maximum luff length and foot length your boat can accommodate for a staysail. While measuring your existing sails can offer a guideline, obtaining precise rig measurements directly from your boat is recommended for the best fit. You should also consider the sail area in relation to your boat’s design and your intended sailing conditions (e.g., cruising or club racing).

Question 6

What maintenance is recommended for a used staysail?

Accepted Answer

Regular care extends the life of any sail, especially a used one:

Cleaning: Rinse your staysail with fresh water after each use to remove salt and dirt. A deeper cleaning with a mild soap or sail-specific cleaner should be performed at least once per season, or more frequently if exposed to harsh conditions. Avoid harsh chemical solvents that can damage the sailcloth.
Drying & Storage: Always ensure the sail is thoroughly dry before folding and storing to prevent mildew and mold. Store it in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area.
Inspection: Regularly inspect the sail for any signs of wear, such as frayed edges, weakened seams, or UV damage, and address any issues promptly.
UV Protection: Protect the sail from prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays when not in use. A sail cover can help shield it from sun damage.
Handling: Minimize flogging (uncontrolled flapping) of the sail, as this can accelerate wear and tear on the fabric.
