Question 1

What is a storm jib and when is it used?

Accepted Answer

A storm jib is a specialized, small, and robust headsail designed for use in severe weather conditions when standard headsails become overpowering or unsafe. Its primary purpose is to help maintain control and steerage of the sailboat in strong winds, typically when winds are too strong for even a heavy-weather jib. It is considered essential safety equipment for offshore sailing.

Question 2

What are the dimensions and specifications of this storm jib?

Accepted Answer

This MURPHY&NYE storm jib has a sail area of 18m². Its key dimensions are:

Luff: 9.4 meters
Foot: 3.8 meters
Leech: 8.35 meters

Question 3

What material is this storm jib made from and what are its properties?

Accepted Answer

This storm jib is constructed from Dacron Cross Cut. Dacron is a woven polyester fabric known for its durability, affordability, and ease of use, making it a reliable choice for cruising and club racing sails. Cross-cut construction involves panels sewn parallel to the foot, which contributes to the sail’s longevity, cost-effectiveness, and ability to maintain its shape over time in moderate conditions.

Question 4

Who is MURPHY&NYE?

Accepted Answer

MURPHY&NYE is an historic and respected nautical brand, founded in Chicago in 1933 by Jim Murphy and Harry Nye Jr. Initially specializing in sail manufacturing, the company has a long-standing reputation for its commitment to sailing challenges, competition, and adventure.

Question 5

What does "HF 4,5 Ø" refer to?

Accepted Answer

“HF 4,5 Ø” refers to a specific hardware or fitting detail on the sail. Without further context, it indicates a particular specification related to the sail’s attachment or construction, likely a diameter or size measurement for a component.

Question 6

How should I care for and maintain this used storm jib?

Accepted Answer

To extend the life of your storm jib, rinse it with fresh water after exposure to saltwater and ensure it dries thoroughly before storage to prevent mildew and abrasion from salt crystals. It should be stored out of direct UV sunlight, ideally in a sail bag. When stowing, rolling the sail is preferable to folding with heavy creases, as this helps preserve the fabric fibers. Regular inspection of the material, stitching, and attachment points is also recommended.
At Resail, we believe in extending the lifecycle of sails, which aligns with proper care to ensure continued performance and reduce environmental impact.

Question 7

Can I have the sail washed before shipping?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the sailmaker can wash the sail before shipping for an additional cost of 70€.
