Sail seeker: Your guide to finding a used mainsail

Why opt for a pre-owned mainsail?

  1. Cost-effective solution: Purchasing a used mainsail can be a budget-friendly option, allowing you to allocate your resources to other sailing essentials or adventures.
  2. Tested performance: As mainsails are supported by mast and boom, they usually have a longer lifespan than jibs or genoa’s which are less supported and possibly damaged at every tack.
  3. Sustainable choice: By giving a used mainsail a second life, you’re contributing to sustainability efforts by reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact.

Things to consider when buying a used mainsail:

  1. Condition assessment: Thoroughly inspect the mainsail for any signs of wear, including tears, fraying seams or UV damage. Specifically check batten pockets. While some wear is expected, ensure that the sail’s condition aligns with your expectations and sailing needs.
  2. Material and construction: Pay attention to the material and construction of the mainsail. Quality materials and craftsmanship can prolong the sail’s lifespan and enhance its performance on the water. Pay attention to delamination in the leech.
  3. Compatibility: Verify that the used mainsail is compatible with your boat’s specifications by checking the P (luff) and E (foot)measurements (see below). The P and E are the maximum measurements so leave some room for stretch.

When you opt to search online be aware that sending full size battens may be expensive, sometimes you are better of sourcing these locally. Good luck finding a sail!
