Question 1

What are the key specifications of this Elvstrom staysail?

Accepted Answer

This Elvstrom staysail has a sail area of 26 square meters. Its luff measures 12.8 meters, the foot is 4.07 meters, and the leech is 11.6 meters. It features a SOFT CLEW corner and an AT Cable on the luff with a diameter of 12.5 mm.

Question 2

What does "SOFT CLEW corner" signify for this staysail?

Accepted Answer

The clew is the aft, lower corner of a sail where the foot and leech meet, and where sheets (control lines) are attached to adjust the sail’s angle and tension. A “SOFT CLEW corner” typically indicates that the attachment point for the sheets is designed without a rigid metal ring, often using a reinforced soft loop or construction that distributes load more flexibly. This can reduce wear on lines and hardware and offer more adaptable sheeting angles.

Question 3

What is the purpose and diameter of the "AT Cable on Luff"?

Accepted Answer

The luff is the front edge of the sail. The “AT Cable on Luff” is a structural cable integrated into the leading edge of the sail. Its primary purpose is to provide stiffness and strength to the luff, which is often crucial for maintaining sail shape, especially in furling applications or when significant luff tension is applied. This particular cable has a diameter of 12.5 mm.

Question 4

On what type of boat was this staysail previously used, and what does this imply for suitability?

Accepted Answer

This staysail was previously used on a Beneteau First 36.7. This implies the sail is sized and designed for a performance cruiser/racer of similar dimensions and rigging characteristics. The Beneteau First 36.7 is known for its racing capabilities and can be set up with a double-headsail rig, where a staysail is commonly deployed.

Question 5

What are the general benefits of adding a staysail to a sailboat's inventory?

Accepted Answer

Augments Sail Power: Staysails add horsepower, particularly in reaching conditions, and can create better slotting between sails.
Improves Balance: They help balance the helm, making the boat easier to steer, especially when used in combination with a reefed mainsail.
Versatility: Staysails break down the total sail area into smaller, more manageable components, offering more options for varying wind conditions and angles.
Heavy Weather Performance: They serve as a robust and safer heavy-weather headsail compared to a deeply furled genoa, lowering the center of effort and moving it aft.

Question 6

How can I assess if this used staysail is suitable for my specific boat?

Accepted Answer

To determine suitability, you should compare the dimensions of this staysail (Luff: 12.8 m, Foot: 4.07 m, Leech: 11.6 m) with your boat’s rig measurements. Key dimensions to consider for your boat include the ‘I’ dimension (height from deck to headstay attachment) and the ‘J’ dimension (horizontal distance from mast to headstay attachment). It is highly recommended to consult a professional sailmaker or rigging specialist with your boat’s specific measurements for accurate fitment advice, especially since boat modifications can affect required sail dimensions.
