Question 1

What are the key specifications of this JIB?

Accepted Answer

This JIB from SAIL DESIGN has a sail area of 43 m2 and is in used condition. Its key dimensions are:

Luff: 15.83 m
Foot: 5.5 m
Leech: 11.2 m

The additional notations of “HF: 5,5 Ø”, “FEEDER: 950”, and “CUT BACK: 40” are specific design or rigging parameters from the original sailmaker.

Question 2

What does "Jib with no UV Cover" imply for its use and maintenance?

Accepted Answer

A jib without a UV cover is more susceptible to degradation from sunlight. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation significantly weakens sail fibers and stitching, accelerating the aging process of the sail material. This can lead to fading, reduced performance, and eventually tears. The stitching is often the first component to show signs of deterioration.
To extend the life of this sail, it is crucial to protect it from direct sunlight when not in use. This can be achieved by removing the sail from the boat and storing it indoors, or by using a separate sail bag or cover to shield it from UV exposure.

Question 3

How can I determine if this JIB is suitable for my sailboat?

Accepted Answer

To ensure this jib fits your sailboat, you should compare its dimensions (luff, foot, leech) against your boat’s rig measurements. Key measurements to consider include your forestay length (for the luff), mast height, and deck clearance. The luff length of the sail should not exceed your maximum hoist, though a slightly shorter luff is generally acceptable. It is recommended to take accurate measurements directly from your boat’s rig, rather than relying on old sail labels which may be unreliable due to stretch or rig modifications.

Question 4

What is the expected lifespan of a used jib sail?

Accepted Answer

The lifespan of a used jib sail varies significantly based on its original quality, how it was previously used, and the care it receives. While Dacron (woven polyester) sails can last for many years, their performance and shape will gradually degrade over time. For recreational cruisers, a well-maintained Dacron sail might offer up to 10 years of serviceable life. Factors such as prolonged UV exposure, excessive flogging, or consistent use outside its designed wind range can considerably shorten a sail’s life. Even sails that are considered “blown out” (misshapen) can still be suitable for casual day-sailing. Resail focuses on giving proven sails a second life, emphasizing that with proper care, used sails can continue to provide reliable service.

Question 5

What maintenance is recommended for this used JIB?

Accepted Answer

Proper maintenance is essential to maximize the lifespan and performance of a used jib, especially one without a UV cover. Recommended practices include:

Rinsing: Regularly rinse the sail with fresh water to remove salt crystals, which can be abrasive and corrosive to the sailcloth.
Drying: Always ensure the sail is thoroughly dry before stowing to prevent mildew growth.
Storage: Roll the sail rather than folding it to avoid damaging the fibers with sharp creases. Store the sail in a cool, dry place, ideally in a sail bag, to protect it from UV radiation and environmental factors.
Inspection: Periodically inspect the sail for any signs of chafe, wear and tear, especially on the stitching, and any damage to hardware.
UV Protection: Given the absence of a built-in UV cover, consider using an external sail cover or a custom-fitted sacrificial UV strip if the sail is to be left on a furler for extended periods.

Question 6

What type of sailing is this 43 m2 jib from SAIL DESIGN best suited for?

Accepted Answer

This 43 m2 jib from SAIL DESIGN is a substantial headsail, designed to add sail area, enhance boat balance, and improve upwind performance. Generally, larger jibs like this are well-suited for light to moderate wind conditions, where they provide significant drive and power. Given its used condition and Resail’s mission to provide sails for cruisers and club racers, this jib is likely an excellent option for general cruising or club racing. It can offer good performance and contribute to an enjoyable sailing experience in a range of conditions.
